About Empathy Ability
Empathy Ability publishes short explainers and charts about how people live around the world: population, health, technology, economy and climate. We believe understanding the numbers behind other people's lives is a form of empathy.
Where the data comes from
We use official open data, starting with the World Bank's World Development Indicators, published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. Every chart and article names its source, indicator and year.
Editorial rules
- Every number is taken directly from the source dataset and checked before publishing.
- Rankings compare economies with at least one million people unless stated otherwise, so tiny territories do not distort them.
- We explain what a measure does not show (for example, GDP per capita is not household income).
- We do not claim causes the data cannot prove. Factors discussed in research are described as such.
- Drafts are prepared with software, including AI assistance, and reviewed by a person before publishing.
